6 Tips to Avoid Teeth Whitening Sensitivity

October 1, 2020

Whitening treatments are one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance. Your smile will be brighter, more beautiful, and more confident. It may also be more sensitive. Not everyone will experience teeth whitening sensitivity, but some folks do.

Don’t let a fear of sensitivity keep you from whitening! Fortunately, dental sensitivity rarely lasts long. There are also ways to minimize it. We’re sharing several tips for doing so with you here.

Redeem Our Offer for $100 Off Pro Whitening

You can receive in-office whitening treatments at our Lumberton, TX office, or we can provide you with professional supplies for whitening at home. Either way, your smile will look terrific!

Call 409-206-1763 to find out more about our professional whitening. Ask about our special offer of $100 off an office whitening treatment. Redeem the offer in:

  • November and December (so you’ll look great at holiday parties)
  • February (to give yourself a boost at the tail end of winter)
  • April (to prepare for graduations, weddings, and other spring events)
  • August (to start off the school year with a bright smile)

Will I Experience Teeth Whitening Sensitivity?

Teeth whitening is one of our most popular cosmetic services – and for good reason. It’s a fast and affordable way to improve your smile. Not everyone will experience teeth whitening sensitivity. But your teeth may tingle or become sensitive to temperature extremes if you have a sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide.

The products we use contain a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide than drugstore products. That means they get your smile brighter, and in less time. But they may also cause temporary sensitivity.

Here’s How to Lessen Dental Sensitivity

Whether you choose an in-office whitening treatment or professional supplies you can use at home, our dentists will examine your teeth to make sure they don’t have any small cracks, cavities, or other issues that can lead to extreme sensitivity or even pain. The first step in avoiding teeth whitening sensitivity is to ensure your teeth are in good shape.

In addition, you can take these steps:

  • Do What the Directions Say – We know you want your teeth to be as white as possible. So you may be tempted to use the bleaching gel more often or keep it on your teeth longer than recommended. Stick to the directions for the best results.
  • Take a Break – If you do experience tingling or a similar reaction, give yourself a day off between whitening sessions.
  • Avoid Temperature Extremes – Consuming very cold or very hot substances may cause teeth whitening sensitivity. As much as you can, stick to room temperature food and beverages for a day or two after whitening.
  • Use a Gentle Touch to Brush – Vigorous brushing always has the potential to make teeth sensitive, but especially if you’re whitening. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle touch when brushing. You may also want to use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
  • Take a Pain Reliever – Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen before gel is applied.
  • Ask About Fluoride Treatments – If your tooth enamel is thin or weak, you’ll be more susceptible to teeth whitening sensitivity. We can apply fluoride to strengthen your enamel. As a bonus, this will also make your smile more resistant to decay.

Ready to take advantage of our offer for $100 off in-office whitening? Call  Family Dental Care at 409-206-1763. If you’d prefer, you can choose home whitening instead. Either way, your smile will look great!

I’m here from New Hampshire visiting family. I broke my tooth causing it to have a razor sharp edge. I called several Dentist in the Lumberton area. Family Dental Care were the only Dentist able to see me the next day. They were absolutely wonderful! They were able to repair my tooth by grinding down the sharp edge. They preformed this procedure because I have a appointment with my Dentist when I get home. The cost was extremely reasonable considering that I’m from out of state and not their patient. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated their prompt service and genuine concern for my health. I would definitely recommend them. If I lived here they would absolutely be my Dentist!

Top notch service. They were completely booked 3 days before Christmas. I was a new patient. I had used another local dentist. Ended up with a dry socket and the other dentist was not answering the phone or the emergency phone. For 3 days I tried to call them and they didn't answer. If it wasn't for David's office and for squeezing me in literally the last second, when they told everybody else they couldn't get the in. When they heard my story they squeezed me in. thank God they did. It was a dry socket and they were able to fix it for me. They just earned a new customer! I won't be going back to the other one! Thank you again to everybody there for helping me.
